The international literature festival berlin (ilb) invites individuals, schools, universities, the media, and cultural institutions to participate in a worldwide film screening of "The Dissident" by Bryan Fogel. The film reconstructs the background of the murder of Saudi Washington Post journalist and regime critic Jamal Khashoggi and sheds light on the geopolitical and power-strategic context of the case.

Due to the current pandemic situation, the Worldwide Screening will take place on 10 December 2021, the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the United Nations in Paris in 1948, and 3 May 2022, the World Press Freedom Day.

With the second date on 3.5.2022 we hope to give all interested organizers* the opportunity to plan the screening in the appropriate, safe enviroment.

The World Press Freedom Day once again gives reason to remember Jamal Khashoggi's commitment to a more open society and to point out the precarious situation of the freedom of the press in Saudi Arabia: More than 30 media professionals are currently in prison in Saudi Arabia for the same reason that exiled journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered. Saudi Arabia ranks 170th in the press freedom rankings (as of early 2021).

Institutions and individuals who would like to participate with a screening on 10 December 2021 and/or on 3 May 2022 are asked to send us the following information: Organisers, venue, time, participating actors, event language, link to your website if applicable. The email address is: worldwidescreening@literaturfestival.com. The ilb will announce the events on the website www.literaturfestival.com and on social media.
