Because of his alleged participation in a political assassination plot, Danny Morrison, Sinn Féin’s publicity director, was condemned to eight years of prison in 1990. Today, as an organizer of literary events, he makes a cultural contribution to the reconciliation between the former opponents of the conflict inNorthern Ireland. As a writer, Morrison invests a remarkable trust in literature, conveying »old« stories into the present—as in the novel »Rudi«, for example, which adapts Hermann Hesse’s story of the drifter Knulp, a gifted and soulful man who can’t find a place in his environment. In Knulp’s case, »the environment is as guilty as Knulp himself« (Hermann Hesse).
