In June 2010, the Nobel-prize-winning Portuguese novelist, essayist, poet, playwright and children's book author José Saramago died. A memorial event will honour the memory of the great humanist who never tired of getting involved or offering resistance. In his parable-laden novels he always commented critically on world events. On awarding him the Nobel Prize, the Swedish Academy described him as a writer who, »with parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony, enables us apprehend an illusory reality«.
