Photographs of the worldwide readings for Liu Xiaobo 2011

The international literature festival berlin (ilb) called upon cultural institutions, schools, radio stations and interested individuals to participate in a worldwide reading of the poem “Wait for Me with Dust” and the Charter 08 of the Chinese author and Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2010 Liu Xiaobo on March the 20th  2011.

On March the 20th 2006, the third anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, did the ilb and the Peter-Weiss-Foundation for Art and Politics initiate the first worldwide reading of Eliot Weinberg’s text “What I heard about Iraq”. March the 20th has become the anniversary of the political lie. Further readings followed after the murder of Anna Politkowskaja,  in the run-up of the Olympic Games in China, against the government of Robert Mugabe, in commemoration of Mahmud Darwish, and in support of the democratic opposition in Iran. Close to one hundred institutions, including radio and TV stations are regularly participating in the readings all over the world.

With this in mind the ilb and the Peter-Weiss-Foundation for Art and Politics appealed for a worldwide reading on March the 20th 2011 to denounce the ongoing imprisonment of the Chinese Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo by the Chinese government.

More than 180 organisations and institutions all over the world participated in the worldwide reading for Liu Xiaobo, organizing readings in their home towns. The Worldwide Reading Team and the ilb would like to thank you all for your engagement and enthusiasm by setting up a platform on our festival website to exhibit your reading photographs. We are looking forward to receiving your photographs. If you are missing your photographs on the site, please do send them to us again. The email address is: worldwidereading@literaturfestival.com
