Through his publications in »Lettre International« and his books, Liao Yiwu has shown us what Chinese every-day life means, like no other author. It was not long after he was exiled that he was honoured with the Geschwister-Scholl-Preis, a laudation by Herta Müller, was awarded the Ryszard-Kapuściński-Preis and finally also the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. The new Berlin resident presents his latest book in form of Interviews that remind us in terms of quality and length of the »Paris Review« and André Müllers. The author still had these in his suitcase, or to be exact: in his rucksack…

Taiye Selasi has coined the new term »Afropolitan« and by doing so launched the percipience of a new generation of cosmopolitan Africans in the time of globalisation. Her first novel »Ghana must go« was published simultaneously in 15 languages this year, with great success. The author, daughter of a Nigerian-Scottish mother and a father from Ghana, was born in London, raised in Massachusetts and is now living in Rome. Characteristics of her work are the melodious and »electrifying« (as described by the Süddeutsche Zeitung) language. She tells the story of a 21st century family originating from West Africa, and redefines the great subjects »Home« and »Identity«.
Taiye Selasi opens the ilb 2013.

Three brothers are in the focus of Daniel Kehlmanns latest novel »F«. Every one of the brothers has his own special character traits: one is a hypocrite, one a defrauder and the other a forger. Martin, an obese and faithless catholic priest, meets his half-brother Eric for dinner. Eric is a financial advisor who is highly in dept and on the verge of being imprisoned. He has eerie visions, but refuses to tell anyone about this.
»F« is a masterpiece about lies and truth, about family, fraud and the power of fiction- the first time that Daniel Kehlmann reads from this novel for the prelude of the ilb 2013.

We are happy to welcome Alain Madanckou for the second time now, as he was our guest on the first ilb in 2001. »Broken Glass« is the title of Alain Mabanckou’s (Rep. Congo/FR) latest book, in which he, with great humor, tells the biographies of Congolese underdogs, having to deal with the debris of a colonial history, as well as of the contemporary Congolese elite, with its corruption and bureaucracy. In his novel »Mathématique Congolaises«, the author In Koli Jean Bofane (Democratic Rep. Congo/Belgium) describes the rhythm of day-to-day life in Kinshasa. The main character tries to bring order into the chaos around him and make the turbulent and confusing world around him calculable, in a highly entertaining manner. Robinson Solo (Rep. Congo) is known for her poetry slamming. Her live performances are her philosophy of live, her way of expressing her »passport to freedome«.

The youngest afghan history was 1979 when the Soviet Union invaded the country. Since then Afghanistan has been the setting of violent encounters that culminate in the intervention of the USA after 9/11. Millions of dollars have since been invested in the country, soldiers from all over the world (including Germany) have been stationed here, thousands of people (especially civilians) have been injured or killed.
Ahmed Rashid (Pakistan) is one of the world’s most important journalists in the region. In his speech, he will draw a bigger picture and give a prognosis about Afghanistan for 2012, after the international troops have left the country.

He sat at tables with farmers, factory workers, fishermen, and teachers and asked: What happened to the country and the dream that once inspired and formed it?

It was August 1947 when David Rosenberg got off the train in Södertälje, Sweden. Behind him lies the ghetto of Lódz and the concentration camp Auschwitz. In front of him an uncertain future. He committed suicide in January 1960. At this time his son Göran is twelve years old. Five centuries later he makes his way and follows his father’s tracks. As the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung put it, the book »A short Stay« is »more than the survival story of his faster, it is great literature«.

A dirty boy turns into a corrupt entrepreneur, thanks to a self-help book. He trades with the most scarce commodity: water.
