The disaster on which Helon Habila’s political thriller »Oil on Water« is based on is real: For 50 years, foreign companies have been extracting Nigerian oil, which is easily refined. According to the estimations of environmentalists, up to two billion litres of oil have since been spilled into the Niger Delta. The black crude oil is polluting the swamps, mangroves and waterways and threatening the lives of its inhabitants.
The literary critic Claudia Kramatschek talks to the author Helon Habila about crime-thrillers connected to oil in Nigeria.
