Moscow in the 1930s. A stranger intervenes in a conversation between two men, alleging that he witnessed the interrogation of Jesus by Pontius Pilate. The men are even more surprised to hear the stranger predict that one of the two will be decapitated the same evening. This is the beginning of Bulgakov’s absurd satire of a paralysed system, which Alexander Nitzberg has re-translated and clad in a fresh, hands-on language. On the occasion of the new translation’s publication, Bulgakov aficionados will gather and talk about their experiences of reading the author. They will also read their favourite passages to each other and the audience.
After the presentation of “The Master and Margarita”, the self-proclaimed “Political Task Force Orchestra” will play dance music in a folklore brass band arrangement with trumpet, baritone, horn, saxophone, clarinet, trombone and tuba, complemented by the sounds of guitar, drums and singers. The programme includes tunes that are alternatively lovely, bizarre, punk, rocking, sophisticated and ironic.
The protagonists in the soirée have agreed to participate without a fee. The box-office takings will be given to the attorneys of the imprisoned Russian punk band Pussy Riot.
