Goethe in conversation with Eckermann on the 31st January 1827: » I enjoy looking around foreign nations and advise you to do the same. National literature doesn’t have much to say at the moment, the era of World Literature is approaching and everyone must now work towards the acceleration of its arrival.« The term »World Literature« found its usage long ago, at least in the »bigger« languages. But how has it changed, how is it going to change now in our globalised, digital future? What differences are there in the term »National Literature«, does it even exist any more? What chance does the great prose, poetry and drama written in »smaller« languages have of being adopted into the canon of World Literature? What is World Literature today and what is it not? Conducted in English.
