Alexander Yersin, who was originally Swiss but was naturalised by France »for services to science«, played a role in Louis Pasteur’s groundbreaking discoveries. Soon after this, he left for Indochina. In Patrick Deville’s »Plague and Cholera«, the life of the loner Yersin, who was almost forgotten in Europe, is described. He worked as an ethnologist, sailor, farmer, geographer, physician, and scientist ─ best known to history as the discoverer of the plague bacillus.
