Amir Hassan Cheheltan’s “Tehran Trilogy”, thus far only been published in Germany in uncensored form, focuses on Kerâmat, the ambivalent director of the notorious Evin detention centre for political prisoners. Cheheltan’s novels, instead of turning against the rule of the Mullahs, depict the internal contradictions of a country “that necessarily undermines itself because of the selfishness of its executors” (FAZ).
