In his novel “Embrace on Brooklyn Bridge” the Egyptian writer and diplomat Ezzedine Choukri Fishere ponders forms of alienation, in particular with respect to Arab immigrants in the Western world. Darwish, a retired professor, hosts a dinner party. His guests – wife, children, grandchildren, and friends – are close to him, and yet, hopelessly, strangers.
