Jaffy Brown is growing up in poverty. One day he meets a lost tiger, and begins to feel a longing for faraway places. Together with his friend Tim he signs up on a whaler, and experiences the storms of the Indian Ocean, the limits of the world and of humankind. Carol Birch was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2011 because of her “extraordinary imagination combined with a bright and powerful language”.
