The author was awarded the Booker Prize in 1990 and was named a »Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire« by the Queen. Her new novel is a panorama of a quarter of a century: families in London, Paris and Schwabing (a suburb of Munich) experiment with new, more liberal ways of living before the outbreak of the First World War brings an end to their efforts.
