In Bart's novel »Die Fliegenfängerfabrik« (tr: The Flycatcher Factory) the factory owner, Chaim Rumkowski, takes over the ghetto in Łódź and orders the people there to manufacture essential armaments components for the Wehrmacht in order to save their lives. The ghetto rapidly develops into a forced labour camp until it is finally cleared in 1944. Did Rumkowski make a deal with the Devil?
