Fatema Mernissi was born in Fez, Morocco in 1940. After graduating in political science and sociology in Rabat and Paris she received a doctorate in the US. In 1975 she rejected misogynist interpretations of the Koran with �Beyond the Veil� and in numerous publications has pleaded for an understanding between the Western and Islamic worlds based on democracy. Mernissi teaches at the University of Rabat.
