Marilene Phipps was born in Haiti. The artist and poet studied Anthropology and Art in the USA, where she lives today. Her artistic and poetic work is greatly inspired by the culture, nature and religion of Haiti. She is known internationally for her paintings. For the volume of poetry, 'Crossroads and Unholy Water' (2000), she received the Crab Orchard Review Poetry Prize.
