José Luis de Juan was born in Palma in 1956. At the age of 17 he wrote an award-winning novella about Hemingway.  Later he studied Law and Information Science in Barcelona and worked as a lawyer, before starting to write again. For his novels he received various Spanish literature awards, including the Premio Juan March Cencillo for "El apicultor de Bonaparte" (1996; t: Bonaparte’s Bee-keeper) and the young people's literature prize Gran Angular for "Recordando a Lampe" (2001; t: Remembering Lampe). He was a guest of the Villa Waldberta in Munich from December 2004 to February 2005. After stays in Italy and the USA, the author and writer of book reviews returned to live in Mallorca.
