Literature for Africa
Last year, the International Literature Festival Berlin launched the Literature for Africa Campaign. Our goal – over an intended period of ten years – is to facilitate the donation of books to libraries in Africa. Through this campaign, we hope to improve the state of African libraries and to foster and expand access to literature.
This campaign is calling upon private households, publishers and other donors and sponsors to donate literary works to African libraries or to buy books in local bookshops. We have sent questionnaires to libraries requesting the language and genre of books that would be most useful to them. We now have profiles from over 80 libraries. A condition of their participation is confirmation from the finance ministry in their respective countries that we can send the books without paying customs.
Monetary donations are required in order to cover possible transport costs or to buy books from sellers in Africa as a way of supporting regional publishers and book stores.
Below is a list of participating libraries as well as account information for monetary donations.
There is also the possibility to buy books for African libraries through Amazon. We have put together a wish list under the name “literatureforafrica” on www.amazon.de and www.amazon.fr with a selection of books desired by libraries participating in the campaign. You can choose a library from our website and select and order books in the language and genre desired by that library. Amazon will send the books directly to the library of your choice. Simply enter the library’s address as you place your order.
Books in African languages can also be purchased and sent through the website www.peppercornbooks.com.
