Under the Erdoğan regime Turkey is characterised by authoritarianism, aggression, and imperialistic nostalgia. The president monopolises power, suppresses dissent, persecutes minorities and still retains the support of a large part of the Turkish population. Is this kind of majoritarianism a form of democracy? How can this alarming development be countered from within and from the outside?

MODERATION:

DORIS AKRAP [D] is a journalist and since 2008 an editor at »taz«. She co-organises the anti-racist reading show »Hate Poetry« and is actively involved in the campaign for the release of Deniz Yücel.

WITH:

RAMAZAN AKSOY [Turkey/ Kurdistan] is a theatre producer and author. He is actively involved in the independent »Association of Bridging Peoples« as an advocate for Syrian refugees in Turkey.

HAYKO BAGDAT [Turkey/ Armenia] is a journalist and staff member of the independent Turkish internet magazine »Diken«. He lives in exile in Berlin, where he, together with Can Dündar, founded the bilingual journalism platform »Özgürüz«.

EDHEM ELDEM [Turkey] is an historian focusing on late Ottoman history, with a particular emphasis on Westernization and modernity. He teaches at the Department of History, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul.

PETER SCHNEIDER [D] is a writer of fictionbooks, essays and screenplays. He has published twenty novels and non-fiction books, some of which have been translated into 25 languages. He teaches at American universities.
