Messy colonial history, bloody civil wars, massive flows of refugees, the unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the collapse of state structures, and rising authoritarianism after the Arab Spring – the Middle East is tormented by numerous conflicts while ethnic, religious, and economic tensions are exacerbated by internal and external parties. How can the different conflicts be resolved for long-term stability and the creation of a democratic future?

MODERATION:

STEFAN WEIDNER [D] is an Islam scholar, writer, and translator of Arabic poetry. His numerous works focus on themes of the Arabic world. Until 2016, he was the editor of »Fikrun wa Fann«.

WITH:

SELMA DABBAGH [Palestine/ GB] is a writer and human rights attorney. Her literary work focuses on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

LEYLA DAKHLI [Tunisia/ F] is an historian who specialises in the history of Arabic culture and society. She works at The National Centre for Scientific Research, Paris. She is currently based at the Centre Mark Bloch in Berlin.

BASHSHAR HAYDAR [Lebanon] is Professor of Philosophy at the American University of Beirut. He specialises in moral theory, applied ethics, and aesthetics.

KHALED KHALIFA [Syria] lives in Damascus and writes screenplays, novels, and poetry. His novel »No Knives in the Kitchens of This City« [2016] won numerous prizes.
