Joachim Fest,
born in Berlin in 1926, numbered among the most acclaimed German
historians and journalists. He was the editor in chief of NDR
television and editor of the »Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung«. His
biographies on Hitler and Speer have been translated into several
languages and »The Downfall« (2002), a historical sketch of Hitler's
last days, was the basis for the eponymous film by Bernd Eichinger.
Shortly after the publication of »Ich nicht« (2006; t: Not I), the
autobiographical account of his childhood and youth in the years of
National Socialism, Joachim Fest passed away on September 11, 2006.
