Adel Karasholi was born in Damascus, Syria.
He is a bi-lingual poet, essayist and translator. In 1957 he
became the youngest member of the opposition Arabic Writer’s
association. After a ban was imposed on them and the beginning of
persecution, he went into exile in 1995. His emigration stops
were: Beirut, West Berlin and Munich. Since 1961 he has
lived in Leipzig. There he studied at the Johann R. Becher
Literary Institute and at the theatre school. In 1979 he
did a PhD with a thesis on the theatre of Brecht, from 1968-1993
he was foreign language assistent at Leipzig University.
Since 1980 Karasholi was a member of the GDR's
Writers' Union, since 1990 he has been a member of the German Writers'
Association and since 1992 he has been a member of the German PEN. He
was awarded the Kunstpreis of the city of Leipzig and the
Adalbert-von-Chamisso-Preis. Karasholi lives in Leipzig.
