Karl Schlögel was born in Hawangen in the Allgäu in 1948. He studied Philosophy, Sociology, Eastern European History and Slavonic Studies at the Free University Berlin, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and is a professor of Eastern European history at the Europa University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder. He received numerous awards for his work such as the Lessing Preis of the city of Hamburg, Germany. Recently he published 'Planet der Nomaden' (2006; t: Planet of Nomads).
