Guest of the ilb 2003
Herfried Münkler was born in Friedberg, Germany in 1951. He studied German Literature and Language, Politics and Philosophy. He has been a lecturer in Political Theory at the Humboldt University in Berlin since 1992. He is editor of the series 'Politische Ideen'. In 2002 he aroused much media attention with his new book 'Die neuen Kriege', a critical analysis, including a deep, historical contextualisation of new forms of warfare. In his latest publication ‘Der Wandel des Krieges – Von der Symmetrie zur Asymmetrie’ (2006; t: The Transformation of War – From Symmetry to Asymmetry) Münkler addresses this theme. However, the sixteen essays in the volume are not limited to discussion of the development from classical warfare between countries to new forms of war, like terrorism. Rather, they cover a broad spectrum of topics, in which questions on time cycles of war and on contemporary defence policy in Germany and Europe are analysed.
