The writer, essayist and journalist was born in the Friesland province in 1946. After publishing three best-sellers, including »In Europa« (2004), he is one of the best-known writers of non-fiction in the Netherlands. His most recent book to be translated into German is »De Brug« (2007). This year he received the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding.
