Najem Wali was born in Basra,
Iraq in 1956. He emigrated to Europe in 1980 after being imprisoned and
tortured for activities against the régime. In his novel »Die Reise
nach Tell al-Lahm« (2004) the author describes his native country from
the distant perspective of the exile. The book has been banned in
several Arab countries. Wali currently lives in Berlin, where he works
as a freelance writer and cultural correspondent for the Arab newspaper
»al-Hayat«.
