David Machado was born in Lisbon in 1978. He studied economics at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, and began his literary career writing stories that appeared in a supplement of the daily paper »Diário de Notícias«. »O fantástico Verão do Café Lanterna« (t: The fantastic summer of Café Lanterna) was included in the anthology »Contos de Verão« (2004; t: Summer tales). Along with a novel, »O Fabuloso Teatro do Gigante« (2006; t: The giant’s fabulous theatre) – a fantastical journey through the inventive and enchanted imaginary world of Thomas and his wife Eunice, who relocate to a small village where they don’t know anyone – Machado has also published two children’s books. He was awarded the Prémio Branquinho da Fonseca in 2005.
