Literature Behind Bars

In its section Literature behind bars, the international literature festival berlin has been hosting annual readings in several prisons in Berlin. Inspired by the prison theatre project ‘aufBruch’, whose productions with detainees have attracted attention worldwide, Martin Jankowski organized for the first time in 2002 a literary programme for prisoners in the detention centres of the city.

Since then internationally renowned guests of the ilb have presented their books behind bars, on a voluntary basis (and without any remuneration). They read from their works and discuss with the prisoners. These events have always been unforgettable experiences for both parties. The Literature behind bars programme has become an exciting and welcome offer for the detainees and for the writers. The interest in the project, and the support granted by the prison administrations, are equally impressive. The readings have taken place in the big men’s prisons, in the legendary detention centre of Moabit, and in the remand centre for young people, and have allowed a stimulating exchange between audience and authors.
