Tania James is the author of »Atlas of Unknowns« (2009) a trans-national novel set between India and the United States, and concerning two sisters whose relationship is put to the test by a lie. Her second book, »Aerogrammes and Other Stories« (2012), contains a range of characters, including a turn-of-the-century Indian wrestler in »Lion and Panther in London«, and a gifted dance instructor who falls victim to her own vanity in »Light & Luminous«. Stories from »Aerogrammes« have been published in »Granta«, »Boston Review«, and »One Story«, among other places, and have thrice been nominated for the Best American Short Stories anthologies. For her latest novel, »The Tusk That Did the Damage« (2014), James focused on the moral complexities of the ivory trade as conveyed through the eyes of a poacher, a documentary filmmaker, and, in a feat of audacious imagination, an infamous elephant known as the Gravedigger.

»The Tusk That Did the Damage« was shortlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize in 2016, and has been longlisted for the Financial Times/Oppenheimer Award. She teaches in the Masters of Fine Arts program at George Mason University, and lives in Washington DC.
