Scott McCloud, creator of comic book classics such as »UNDERSTANDING COMICS«, »RE-INVENTING COMICS« and »MAKING COMICS«, returns to the spotlight with his 496 page graphic novel »THE SCULPTOR«. McCloud carried the idea for »THE SCULPTOR« with him for more than two decades and it took him yet another five years to finish his work. »THE SCULPTOR« tells the story of talented but unknown sculptor David Smith. He accepts the Faustian offer to create any sculpture he can imagine for 200 days, no matter the material. The price for being able to create these works of art is his life. However, David does not expect two things: the difficulty of creating an artwork and... love.

McCloud on the origin of »THE SCULPTOR«: »I’ve wanted to tell the story of The Sculptor since before writing Understanding Comics, and the book’s creation has turned into an incredible learning experience for me and, I hope, an exciting reading experience for comics-lovers. It took me five years to write and draw, and I promise I used every single minute to make it the best book I can.«

Scott McCloud will present his work on Wednesday the 11th of March, 2015 at 8 p.m., as well as on Thursday the 12th of March, 2015 at 9 a.m. This will be the German premiere of the graphic novel and it will take place in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The events will be hosted by Jens Balzer (Berliner Zeitung). Immediately after the event, McCloud will sign copies of his books which our partner bookstore Modern Graphics will be selling at the bookstall. In addition to the American (First Second) and German editions (Carlsen Verlag, € 34,99) of »The Sculptor«, other works from McCloud will also be available.

PRESS COVERAGE

»Scott McCloud's The Sculptor is the best graphic novel I´ve read in years. It's about art and love and why we keep on trying. It will break your heart.« Neil Gaiman

»After previously explaining the art of making, reading, and understanding comics in his trilogy of essential guides to the medium, McCloud, in this gloriously romantic graphic novel, doesn't just define a genre – he exemplifies it.« Publishers Weekly

»The fluidity of McCloud´s visual narrative carries us along with a sweep impossible to duplicate in prose, and, through it its climax, the story's commitment to its harsh, inevitable, but ultimately sublime outcome qualifies this as a work of stunning, timeless graphic literature.« Booklist

»McCloud's epic generates magic and makes an early play for graphic novel of the year.« Publishers Weekly

»What a brilliant and gripping book. As absorbing as a Victorian novel in terms of character and moral ideas, it somehow manages to be both an inquiry into the subjectivity of art and a zippy portrait of 21st-century hipster urban life.« The Guardian
